Diagram of injury risk zones (Woods, 1996).

Zone 1

Impact protectors are required in these areas. Material to match ZONE 2.

Zone 2

High-abrasion-resistant material required. The minimum EU standard is for four seconds of abrasion resistance. Multiple layers are more effective than single.

Zone 3

Abrasion-resistant material required as these areas have a moderate risk of abrasion. The EU standard is a minimum of 1.8 seconds of abrasion resistance.

Zone 4

Material used here can provide ventilation and elasticity, but should still have some abrasion-resistance qualities. The EU standard is for a minimum of one second of abrasion resistance - so still tougher than jeans.
