How does protective clothing work?

Very quickly. The lifetime of work the right jacket, pants or suit will do for you can be measured in fractions of a second. This is because any protective clothing you wear onboard a motorcycle is most effective off it - when you are sliding or tumbling across a road surface. Remember, over half of all injuries in bike crashes are relatively minor abrasions and surface injuries.

So providing you do not hit a fixed object, such as another vehicle, the kerb or a pole, good protective clothing prevents or reduces injuries by creating a barrier between your skin and the road. And if you do suffer fractures or other internal injuries, it's also likely to help reduce pain and the risk of complications from road dirt in wounds.
