The more you ride, the easier it is to become blasé about the basic rules of defensive riding. It can be like switching on to automatic pilot - you’ve done what you’re about to do again a thousand times on the same stretch of road so you’ll be okay, right? Maybe.
The only time you should use the far side of the road is when you’re overtaking. Riding on either side 'when it suits' is a dangerous habit. If you are going to take a line that makes use of your entire side of the road, do so only when:
An obvious one, but to survive you have to go the extra mile. Be prepared for other road users not to give way, even when you have the legal right-of-way. If in the slightest doubt, give way. You'll live longer.
By adopting a conservative approach to speed and safety, you're likely to stay out trouble both legally and physically. Choosing a bike that is great to ride at slower speeds makes a lot of sense. Remember, cornering and control is where most of the fun is, and these can be enjoyed at modest speeds.
Before you start getting an attitude about other road users, check the latest road code for motorcyclists and be aware of the rules.
