Developing a checklist and making a habit of running through it before each ride is likely to add years to your motorcycle's life. Not to mention your own. It's that simple.
First things first
Before you climb on board ask yourself:
- Am I in a fit physical and mental condition to ride?
- Am I wearing appropriate protective gear? Many crashes occur near home so gearing up even for the shortest ride is wise.
- Is there anything in my pockets which could injure me in a fall?
- Are the conditions safe to ride in?
Now check the bike for:
- Tyre appearance, including freedom from anything likely to cause a puncture.
- Brake lever and pedal feel.
- Correct rear-vision mirror adjustments.
- Head, indicator, tail and brake lights all functioning.
- Horn working.
- Fuel level and freedom from leakage.
- Suitable suspension settings.
- Load security.
Additional weekly checks of tyre pressure, tread depth, oil levels and chain adjustment and lubrication are another smart move.
