The difference between buying a dodgy used car and a dodgy used bike? One’s a lemon, the other’s a deathtrap. Okay, so you can come off badly in a car crash. But you’re certain to come off worse on a motorbike, and you’re more at risk anyway.
Buying a used machine can be a satisfying experience. It may be all you can afford or the only way to get the bike of your dreams. But always keep your eyes wide open.
Whatever you’re buying, you want to be sure you’re not going to get ripped off. Buying from a dealer offers at least some chance of recourse, but you should still check everything over carefully.

Look for crash scrapes on the mirrors, indicators, bar ends, lever ends, exhaust, seat unit and the bottom of the forks (bodywork damage is usually obvious).
