carrying and storing gear

Luggage

Few motocycles have much luggage capacity as standard. But it’s perfectly possible to equip most bikes to take all you need for a bit of touring. Bear in mind all the same caveats apply as for carrying pillions.

It’s a simple fact that bigger bikes can carry more without the same effects on their performance and stability.

Luggage rack systems

Complete luggage assemblies are available and sometimes even include fitting. If not, you’ll need to fit them yourself. Follow instructions carefully and, after 200 kms of riding, check over every nut and bolt for fastness, just in case.

A custom designed hard luggage set offers great security and it usually doesn’t affect the way your bike rides too much. One thing to watch out for is high-speed weave. Some bikes with certain riders aboard can be susceptible with luggage fitted.

You can also fit plain racks that you can strap luggage to. Some offer an optional top box.

Soft luggage

If you don’t want a rack installed, there’s plenty of soft luggage sets you can fit temporarily. These include panniers, tailpacks and tank bags, with various mounting systems.

Things to watch out for are weave (though this is usually not such as problem as with hard luggage) and ensuring nothing dangles or catches.

With soft panniers, make sure no part of them can come in contact with the exhaust. Otherwise your underwear is going to go up in flames.

Make sure tank bags are not so big that they interfere with your control and ability to shift your bodyweight.
