Valve clearances

Once upon a time, checking and adjusting valve clearances was a frequent pastime for motorcyclists. Luckily, it was also relatively easy in the day of pushrod twins and singles.

Nowadays most bikes have overhead cams, and the majority use shims to adjust them. In fact many require removal of the cams in order to set up the shims, so it’s not really a DIY job.

If you are keen to do this sort of job yourself, you’ll be best off buying a workshop manual for your bike. Otherwise you could use a search engine to find some online resources.
