Below-par suspension is potentially dangerous. It can hinder braking performance, interfere with the steering, reduce ground clearance in corners and make holding a course through a bend worryingly imprecise. It also means the machine will be rubbish to ride. So every couple of weeks do the following:
- check damping front and rear by pushing the front down with the front brake on and bouncing your weight on the seat, There should be firm resistance and smooth, controlled rebound
- check forks for signs of a ring of oil. It’s a signal your fork seals are on the way out
- inspect the rear shock unit(s) for any weeping oil. And keep them clean!
