MAM 21 for September

Motorcycle Awareness Month 2026

September is Motorcycle Awareness Month

What is Motorcycle Awareness Month?

Motorcycle Awareness Month (MAM) takes place every September and marks the start of the summer riding season — when many riders get their bikes back on the road after winter.

It’s the perfect time to get ready for the season ahead. Check your bike, check your gear, and check your skills.

This year’s campaign, Let’s Ride – new season, same freedom, celebrates the excitement of getting back on the bike and encourages riders to make Ride Forever part of their start-of-season routine.

MAM is about:

  • helping riders prepare for the season ahead
  • reminding drivers that more bikes are back on the road
  • celebrating the riding community across Aotearoa
  •  encouraging riders to sharpen their skills with Ride Forever.

The best first ride of the season starts with preparation.

Who is behind MAM?

Motorcycle Awareness Month is a nationwide road safety campaign supported by ACC, the Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council (MSAC), NZ Police, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, and local councils, dealerships, gear retailers and bike clubs across Aotearoa.

But MAM is powered by the riding community.

By sharing campaign resources, wearing yellow, hosting an event or encouraging another rider to refresh their skills, you can help make the season stronger for everyone.

Why it matters

Motorcyclists face a higher level of risk on the road, especially as more riders get back on their bikes over the warmer months.

  • Motorcyclists are 21 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in road crashes than people travelling the same distance by car.
  • Each year, around 50 riders and pillions lose their lives in fatal crashes.
  • Motorcycle injury crashes increase during the warmer months, from October to March.
  • Motorcycles make up around 4.5% of vehicles on New Zealand roads but are involved in 13% of accidents and account for 20% of ACC road claims costs.

Ride Forever helps riders build confidence, improve technique and get more out of every ride. Booking a course is a practical way to refresh your skills and prepare for the season ahead.

How can you get involved?

Yellow is the official colour of Motorcycle Awareness Month. Add a touch of yellow to your gear, bike, workplace or event to show your support during September.
